Pittenweem is a coastal village in the East Neuk of Fife.
Characteristic of the area it has an atmosphere and “the light” that appeals to artists. Many have chosen to live there often reflecting the charm in their paintings.
The village has a working harbour and is picturesque with narrow wynds and traditional architecture typical of the East Neuk and its lovely coastline.
The Arts Festival always starts on the first Saturday in August and ends on the second Sunday. It hosts well established artists and newcomers of all calibres and styles. People open their homes and garden buildings, turning them into exhibition centres for their work.
The album shows the village during the 2009 and 2010 Festival (the 27th year).
The opening Saturday is a great day out for everyone with even just a hint of an interest in art.
In addition to art exhibitions there are diverse activities especially on the first Saturday, usually including street musicians, competitions, workshops, a torchlight parade and the day was usually topped off with fireworks. Please note that there will be no firework display at the 2011 Festival. Check with the Pittenweem Arts Festival website (linked further down this page) for specific details of activities each year.
The “knitted fish” shown in the album were auctioned for charity, raising £1700 for the RNLI.
Clanadonia’s Celtic drumming and pipes provided a tribal atmosphere in 2010.
