Caernarfon

The first photo is of the harbour with yachts and boats on (River) Afon Seiont, in the Royal Town of Caernarfon, Gwynedd, North Wales.

I’m not certain but the mountain in the distance could be Mount Snowdon. It was always shrouded in cloud while I was in the area.

It was definitely not the best summer for weather although the sun did shine at times. The evening these were taken it had been a blue sky and sunshine earlier but the light was failing and coming in the wrong direction, so the images of Caernarfon Castle were very dull and grey. I converted to these to monochrome and gave them some “levels and curves” treatment to give some “drama”. It’s always a risk to overdo it and produce hideous artefacts or look fake.

The castle construction was commenced in 1283 AD, replacing a previous Motte-and-Bailey fortification and is easily amongst the largest of the castles in Wales.

Built by Edward I, at the mouth of the River (Afon) Seiont it has a strategic location, overlooking the Menai Strait to Anglesey and was clearly a statement of power by the monarch at the time. In such dull light it certainly made a grim prospect.

Although mainly a ruin internally it is a popular tourist attraction and was used as the venue for the formal investiture of Charles, HRH, The Prince Wales on 1 July 1969.

Earlier when it was still sunny I had an excellent meal at “Villa Marina”, an Italian, “Pasta, Pizzeria & Grill House”.
