GoMA

Having shot as series of images outside, featured in “Wellington’s Hat“, I stepped inside the building at Glasgow’s “Gallery of Modern Art’” (GoMA).

Although it has performed different functions for various organisations over many years, the neoclassical building now the very popular venue for the ‘Gallery of Modern Art’ (GoMA), since 1996.

The interior of the building features some stunning architecture with “Corinthian” pillars and ornate ceilings, providing a magnificent setting for the art installations.

The installations when I was there were works by emerging Scottish Contemporary Artists, Claire Barclay, Karla Black, Nick Evans, Alex, Frost, Lorna Macintyre, James McLardy, Andrew Miller, Mary Redmond and Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan, who I understand are all local to Glasgow.

A photographer often has to make decisions. Do they expose for the prime subject or the surroundings? This image shows exposure for the prime subject. The surrounds are dark and gloomy but provide a moody atmosphere.

Exposing for the surroundings overexposes the illuminated art installation (Shaded, by Andrew Miller, 2011). Having shot in RAW format, were I to be bothered I could probably manipulate the image so that the exposure of main subject balances with the surroundings. But I quite like the effect of the super-bright glowing column. In the templesque setting it reminds me of the “Shekinah Glory”. Most certainly nothing to do with the artist’s intention but Art is what you make of it.

Thanks to the gallery staff for giving me permission to shoot, giving suggestions of places to obtain shots and in this image providing scale, humanity and context.

This is the place they suggested. A view from a “peep-hole” on the first gallery of a well of a galleries. I will feature this gallery itself in a later post. Stay tuned.
